Knowing how to can your own food is very empowering, especially since you will know what is in it.
( this is from one of our instructor Ms. Abby aka the Frugal Fraulien )
Hello and Happy Thanksgiving! Since the holiday is almost upon us, I wanted to let you know about two newly scheduled classes and some turkey news. Being the Frugal Fraulien, you should all know turkey is at an all time low in price. At the same time we are on the brink of a possible Avian Flu Pandemic. Put the two together and it is time to have a Family Emergency Meeting over the holiday while eating succulent turkey, mashed potatoes and GAAARAAAAVEY (quoting Little Richard in a recent commercial). To help you with this daunting task I have prepared two classes: Safe Pressure Canning and Pandemic Preparedness. Please read below and feel free to share with all your friends.
It is my goal to find 10 people who want to participate in the canning class and 35-50 who are ready to learn how to prepare home and family for an Influenza Pandemic.
Enjoy your holiday! I will be cooking up and canning 10 turkeys thanks to Safeway!
Having been part of the state, county and local pandemic planning, I am aware of the plans being made to prepare for an Influenza Pandemic probably the Avian Flu strain. The contingency planning is based not on if something will happen but when something will happen. I have prepared a 2 ½ hour presentation entitled Pandemic Preparedness open to the public at a cost of $30. The seminar includes:
1.. What is a pandemic
2.. History of pandemics
3.. Epidemiology of a virus
4.. Avian Flu
5.. Government and local plans
6.. What is social distancing and what effect will it have
7.. What can you do to prepare for a pandemic
A.. Make a plan
B.. Make a flu kit
C.. Learn basic home healthcare
D.. Store food, water and supplies for a min. of 18 month time span
The next class will be held Monday November 19th at 6:30 pm at The Ant School of Preparedness located at The Survival Center, 19233 Cook Rd, McKenna. Paid pre-registration $25 and last minute registration $30. Please call to reserve a seat so we know which classroom to prepare. One classroom holds 30 and one holds up to 100 and can be prepared for more. Call 458-6778 ext 2 to register with credit card or register in person at The Survival Center Store.
Important! Since it is Thanksgiving time and the time for families to get together, it is the perfect time to hold a family meeting to plan for emergencies. Include everyone even children. Talk about possible emergencies and develop a plan of action. Have a scavenger hunt and collect all your emergency supplies and put them together in one place (trash can with wheels works very well), identify an out of state contact person, identify the family meeting place, make a home and family emergency kit, research the emergency plans from schools, work, local community and your neighborhood. Next step is to have a neighborhood meeting using the Map Your Neighborhood plan developed by Washington Emergency Management.
Also turkey is on sale through out the United States in anticipation of the Thanksgiving holiday. Go buy as many turkeys as your freezer can hold, cook them then can them. If the Avian Flu becomes a pandemic most all fowl will be eliminated. Canned chicken and turkey will be premium. Locally, turkey is $.27/lb with $25 purchase in groceries, $.39/lb 10-15 lb or $.59/lb 17-22lb at Safeway. Fred Meyers offers a free turkey with purchase of $100 in groceries. Mega Foods offers a turkey, ham, bag of potatoes, canned veggie, box of stuffing and can of cranberry sauce for $20. It is suggested you stock up now while the price is right.
If you do not know How to Safely Can Using a Pressure Canner there will be a class on Sunday November 18th from 10-3 $50. We will can turkey, homemade broth and turkey soup (possibly some homegrown Uncle Richard beef too) and learn the basics of pressure canning low acid food, meat, poultry, seafood and soups/stews. Pre register with credit card or in person at The Survival Center or late registration will be $55. The class is limited in size so register early! The class will be held at the "little house" at The Ant School of Preparedness located at The Survival Center, 19223 Cook Rd., McKenna. There will also be a sale price offered for the All American Pressure Canner for all who attend!

Why the book
"Basic Preparedness"
is so important?
Because it saves you time and money. It takes most of the guess work out of figuring what and how much to store. The charts offer a quick and easy reference. It is a "How To" Guide for Preparedness and Self-Reliant Living.
This is an Emergency Preparedness Manual that teaches the reader How - To prepare for most anything that threatens their Survival. The idea of preparedness is spreading rapidly among those waking up to the reality of today's chaotic economic, geologic, political and environmental climate. There are many reference books available that deal with specific areas of preparedness for an uncertain future. That's the problem. There are too many books. Most of us are busy, and reading time is precious, this is why Basic Preparedness was written. Save Time and Money preparing with "Basic" Preparedness".
